Erik ten Hag has hit back at Cristiano Ronaldo, saying he is not in a good place to win the biggest trophies this season despite the Portuguese criticizing the manager.Ten Hag discussed United’s chances of winning the Premier League and Champions League in a pre-season interview.
Ronaldo criticized the lack of ambition on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, saying “Manchester United coach,I can’t say he won’t fight for the league or the Champions League, but Ronaldo has effectively contradicted himself. They can win the Carabao Cup, the Champions League or the Europa League or the Premier League, it’s difficult,” he told Dutch publication AD Sportwereld.
Ten Hag was asked about Ronaldo’s complaint that the United manager should not have told the club that they could not win the title.“You would do well to read this article,” he said.
Ronaldo’s comments, which will leave United in November 2022 after two appearances for the Ten Hag’s side, came ahead of a pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford and a Premier League meeting with Spurs.
Before the international break, United lost their last two games, 2-1 to Brighton and 3-0 at home to Liverpool.Ten Hag must win Saturday’s trip to Southampton.
“We have to win all our games. We will win as many trophies as possible in the league from the start of the season. We’re dealing with injury problems and we still need to bring players back into the team. Before anyone makes excuses, no, we have to win every game,” he said.
