After 41 years away, Villa scored a triumph as they returned to Europe’s most prestigious club competition. The Villa manager paid tribute to Shaw, 63, who died after an illness earlier this month.
Emery said: “I would like to dedicate our victory to Gary Shaw, his family and the entire Aston Villa family. We want to try and follow the path what the team has achieved,” he said.
Emery also tried to pour cold water on substitute Jhon Durán, who inspired the home crowd to rush to victory after scoring only to be denied. In the 86th minute, Amadou Onana scored the first goals in Berne, Youri Tielemans and Jacob Ramsey.
Ramsey fought off some slaps after 11 minutes of the second half and disallowed Ollie Watkins for a handball to make it 3-0 before half-time.
Watkins was not happy about Durán being replaced, but Emery played without concern about a possible ankle injury.
